A group of seven alleged members of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
