Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
